Yedashe, Myanmar, 29 August (efe-epa) - On Wednesday tens of thousand persons were displaced due to flooding after a breach in a reservoir in the centre of Myanmar, firefighters said. Yedashe inhabitants were seen swimming through breast-high flooding, while others held on to palms in desperation when rescuers used cables and blow-up boats, an epa-efe reporter commented.
The shots of the scenes showed fast streams of water that spread across the shallow countryside and reached as high as a viaduct over Swar Creek and the thatched rooftops of submerged buildings. Approximately four hundred buildings from the surrounding towns are affected by the flooding, and a viaduct near the Yangon-Naypyitaw motorway was partially damaged, the reporter said.
The Myanmar Fire Brigade said tens of fire engines and hundred of firefighters have been deployed to help in an emergencies. First-aiders were sent after the Swar watering embankment was broken just before dawn on Wednesday mornings. Myanmar's vice president Henry Van Thio and high-ranking general Min Aung Hlaing travelled to examine the damages and aid measures.
According to the Information Department, the government agencies have suspended the Yangon-Naypyitaw motorway. There have been no reports of any victims.
