Serious flooding in Arakan - Myanmar
Severely flooded Burma's Arakan state in the last few weeks has struck the local population, business and transport are down and several lives have been lost. Arakan State' s Ann Township community-based organisation promoter Myo Lwin said five lives were lost to the floods in Ann and four others from outlying towns.
Transport to and from the area has been disturbed for a few long nights. More than ten buses run from the Aung Mingalar Rangoon terminals to the areas of the state of Arakan, most of them being obliged to stop their work. Aung Thit Sar coach operator Shwe Tin Aung said that the Nghet Pyaw Chaung at Taungup, on the highway connecting Kyaukphyu and Rangoon, has been inaccessible since June 25.
Kyaukphu Rangoon Express services were suspended until Tuesday 30 June, which affected many Rakhine people. "I' m hoping that the roads will be back on track within a week," said Shwe Tin Aung. Hunting a Tat Taung villageie in Ann Township, the Irrawaddy tells him that he was compelled to buy a coach from Rangoon to Taungup and take a ferry to his town.
Nanda Wantha, a friar from the state of Arakan, came to Aung Mingalar coach station to mail a small packet to his family, but the business refused to do so. I' m going to ask the coachman, because the packet is small and very important for my nephews," he said.
On Tuesday, a coachman with Ye Aung Lan Express, Hein Zaw Oo, informed the Irrawaddy that he stumbled across a broken viaduct between the townships of Pa Zun Pyae and Kyae Pin in the township of Thandwe on the highroad. Ye Aung Lan Express proprietor Kyaw Zin Latt said the business owes the customer cash after canceling the two day delivery.
It has now ensured that the busses on the opposite sides of the broken Nghet Pyaw Chaung bridges converge to replace people so that services can be continued. As Kyaw Zin Latt added, the company's stock was almost full of goods they could not carry in the last few trading hours.
One KISAPA coachman, who refused to give his name, said that around the city of Ann, where every car on the Sittwe - Yangon highway would go, three stretches of the highway were almost inaccessible. On Tuesday, the Irrawaddy tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to make contacts with Hla Han, the transportation secretary of the state of Arakan.
