Day Trip to Mawlamyine - Yangon (Rangoon) Forums
Hello, thank you for the information on this article, we have used some of them today to take Yangon to Mawlamyine. The buses depart from Man Dalar Min at 8:30, 12:00, 14:00 and 21:30. And we got our ticket on the coach at noon.
The costs were 5500 kyats. It was about 6 spots plus the backseat empty when we went. There are many motorcycle cabs and a few motorized Trishaw's at the Mawlamyine centralus. Luxurious, the more luxurious ones have only three places compared to the standardfour.
It was not because of the costs, but also because the woman in the coach station in the city was not interested in speaking to us, most unusually in comparison to all the nice folks we made.
Fly to Yangon by rail to Manlamyaing.
It is 300 km from Yangon to Mawlamyine. To a greater or lesser extent, the train must travel the same line, with the line running alongside Hwy 8. There' s the airfield in Mawlamyine, which used to have served some internal targets and also an internal one - as far as the frontier city Mae Sot in Thailand.
The airport was shut down for a while, but is now receiving further services from Yangon. Busses are the quickest connection between Yangon and Mawlamyine, but the overnight procession, although it' s a bit too painful and sluggish, can also be taken into consideration if you don't need a hotelbed to stay comfortable all nig. Things in Burma are getting a little sluggish - yes, we mean really sluggish.
From Yangon to Mawlamyine it will take between nine and ten hour by rail, although the busses will do the same work in half the while. There' s mornig #89 at 7.15, after lunch #175 at 18.25 and dinner #35 at exactly 21.00.
It will take the whole dawn to get to Mawlamyine, and if you don't have much free travel around the countryside, of course it's not the best one. From the timetable's point of views, the afternoons' parade is probably the most unfavourable, as it will take you to Mawlamyine by 4 o'clock in the mornings.
Probably, the evenings are a better idea: you are travelling at sunset and coming to the Mon state's capitol early in the mornings, thus conserving your valuable daytime and a few dollars for an accomodation that - as you have probably already found - is far from being of great value in Myanmar.
Grade #175 continues to Ye and Dawei, while #35 and #89 both end in Mawlamyine. Between Yangon and Mawlamyine there are neither sleepers nor air-conditioned cars - all are air-cooled. Their selection of seating is restricted to normal grade tough and top-of-the-range lying chairs.
As the former are slightly less expensive but far less comfy, we strongly advise you to invest in more luxurious top-of-the-range seating, especially if you are travelling by nocturnal. The price depends strongly on where you buy your ticket: directly at the Yangon railway terminal or from abroad via an agents.
Yangon Central is the Yangon Central Train Way stop on Kun Chan Road, opposite the arena. The train terminal Mawlamyine is on Highway 8, less than one kilometer from the highway bus terminal. Busses to Mawlamyine depart from Yangon Highway Bus Terminal, also known as Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal. It' situated far outside the town, 500 metres eastwards of the Aung Mingalar Highway, between Sat Hmu Street and Sa Gaing Street; another 7 km to the Northwest of Yangon International.
Seating in a collective taxicab from the center of Yangon to the coach station should be 1.000,- MMK. You can buy your coach ticket in town at the ticket desks at the Yangon main station just outside the town. The journey by coach from Yangon to Mawlanyine lasts five to six-hour.
There' s a large selection of sailings from various operators, among them Mandalar Winn Express. Busses run every hour from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., but please be aware that you will be taken to your final destinations after the early morning hour in the afternoons. The price for a normal express coach seating starts at MMK8,000/USD6, which is a good business anyway.
Convenient coaches also flew to Myanmar, and now you can sit back and relax on one of the softs and sometimes even Wi-Fi. Every bus invariably takes a break for a midday break on the way and it is a good chance to drive on the spot - check what your companions order and wear the bag.
From Yangon, busses come to the Highway Bus Station in Mawlamyine, on Highway 8, just south of U Kandi Pagoda. Although at least one daily service from Yangon to Mawlamyine is provided by FMI Air, the fare is completely exorbitant: you must reckon with MMK200,000/USD150. From Yangon the plane leaves at 2.50 pm and reaches the finish line at 3.30 pm.
Formerly the capitol of British Lower Burma, Mawlamyine now finds himself somewhat parochial, drowsy and relaxed, regardless of his fourth-largest city-in-country state. It is a comfortable starting point for exploration and takes you near the world's biggest Buddha, Win Sein Taw Ya, and Bilu Island, where the genuine Mon civilization is well maintained without having to care for the needs of a tour.
There are three services from Yangon to Mawlanyine, #175, which continue down to Ye and Dawei, although you will have to transfer in Ye if your target is Dawei. At a strange time - 4.30 am - he left Mawlamyine and reached Ye in the mornings (.30 am) and Dawei in the evenings (.19 pm).
It is possible to travel the same distance by coach - it will take less time: four hour for Ye and about 6 hour for Dawei (from MMK12,000/USD10). Please be aware that the busses for Ye and Dawei leave from a small coach terminal in the southern part of the city on Highway 8. After the Dawna Mountains highway to Myawaddy has been extended and cobbled, it will take about five hour to get from Mawlamyine to the frontier city of Myawaddy.
However, please be aware that some busses use the old street, which makes the whole ride much longer - up to nine inches. Myawaddy-Mae Sot is also open to visitors from abroad, so you can get from Myanmar to Thailand inland. In a few hour you can get to Hpa-An by coach or vans (from MMK8/USD7), and also for this tour there are touristboats available, although the low speed shuttle does not take the tour any more.
You should be expecting to be paid between MMK10,000/USD8 and MMK15,000/USD13 (three hour, the ferry departs at 20.30). Busses to Hpa-An depart from the Stadtbusbahnhof 350 metres southeast of the town council, in the northern direction. On your way back to Yangon you have the same selection of busses and coaches. When Mount Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) is on your route, take a diversion to see it on your way from Mawlamyine to Yangon.
We have three services from Mawlamyine to Yangon at 8:00 (#90), 19:30 (#36) and 8:00. 55 o'clock (#176), all via Kyaiktiyo (for Golden Rock; 4½ hours) and Bago. Golden Rock can be reached from both Kyaiktiyo and Bago via Kinpun, but if you get off at Kyaiktiyo, you save at least three hour, whereby the best option is to take the 90ram.
Please note: There are busses directly from Mawlamyine to Kinpun, from where you can take a lorry halfway to Mount Kyaiktiyo. Busses take about four hour but are a little more costly than train services.
