The Thorn Tree - from Kawthaung to Yangon
Hi, I'm in Dawei right now, but I'm southbound. I wanted to take the Kawthaung to the Myeik speed boat, but it didn't work that particular date, so I took a Myanma Airways "Special Flight" instead. Alien award for the Kawthaung-Myeik speed boat is now $45, and the plane was $77. my suggestion is if you are planning to take the speed boat, find out if it runs as fast as possible, it seems to get cancelled on a somewhat random base (think it will depend a great deal on how many passengers they are expecting that day).
The speed boat from Myeik to Dawei costs $25 for aliens - and it let us off at a jetty about 25 km southwards of Dawei, so that everyone had to get on a bus to the town. There are more aliens in Dawei than in Myeik. A few miles southwards of Tha Baw Sei is a picturesque little hamlet with nice and welcoming locals, and on the shore is the fishermen's hamlet, which is interesting, although I didn't really welcome myself there.
Just around the point near the fishermen' s town, to the east, there is a beautiful, almost completely abandoned sandy area. From Dawei to Mawlyamine, the journey lasts about 12h. Apparently you have to transfer in Ye. Warned, there are two railway stops in Dawei, one is empty, but my mates went there by chance and had to find out how to get to the "real" station.
