Floods in Yangon, Burma (Myanmar)
Although Yangon (Rangoon) evaded the complete devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis to the remainder of the Irrawaddy Delta in Burma (Myanmar), its suburban areas were fully flooded on May 7, 2008, when the iconos spacecraft took this picture. On 27 November 2007, the picture below shows a neighbourhood opposite the inner town, which lies to the northern side of the upper picture.
It seemed to be a neighbourhood with tree-lined roads and densely spaced buildings. Following the hurricane, the roads became swampy streams. Much of the forest seems to have disappeared, and without its shade the roads seem to be widen. Also the grain field, probably Reis, is flooded just outside the town.
Under the tide, the small canals running between the field and the stream have completely vanished. On May 2 and 3, Cyclone Nargis landed over Burma and brought strong wind, rain and a large tidal wave. A large part of the low-lying region of the nation was inundated after the wind.
Burma's high-ranking US diplomat estimates that more than 100,000 lives could have been lost in the hurricane, CNN said. Most badly hit was the Irrawaddy Delta, where 90-95 per cent of the building was demolished, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
