Hongkong's flag ship airline boosts Yangon services

At the end of October, Cathay Dragon will increase its transport capacities between Yangon and Hong Kong by a further 60 per cent. They are aimed at both Myanmar travelers using Hong Kong as a gateway to North-East Asia and other regions and those travelling on overseas missions.

The airline, formerly Dragoonair, currently flies from Yangon to Hong Kong every day. From 29 October, there will be an extra 4 weekly departures on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. New services leave Hong Kong at 14:25 and reach Yangon at 16:20. From Yangon, the plane leaves at 5:20 pm and arrives in Hong Kong at 9:45 pm with a total of only 2.45h.

The Cathay Dragon is the Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Group's local charter operator, the city's flag ship. This group has a long Myanmar heritage going back almost a hundred years. "Yangon was one of the first Cathay Pacific operated itineraries in the 1940'! "Myanmar Airways countrymanager Nicholas Bury said.

Commenting in the Myanmar Times, Mr Bury said that there are two main causes for taking the first. "First, the new services will enable us to better service our clients who fly between Hong Kong and Myanmar. These extra services offer significantly reduced transfer times to a variety of locations within the Cathay Pacific route via the Hong Kong hub.

"It will reinforce Cathay Pacific's present positioning as the biggest airline by number of Myanmar to US passenger per year and put us on the US road as the preferred carriers on the other major long-haul routes," Bury said. Flights are available to both tourist and corporate clients.

The up to 40 pieces of air transport on the line come from Hong Kong Airport customers who fly from Myanmar's trading centre to other cities. The British Chamber of Commerce Myanmar's sponsoring partner, Cathay, is expecting the new services to be backed by European arrivals and Yangon travelers to Europe and North America.

Cathay' s intensified involvement in Myanmar's trading capitol comes at a moment when others seem to have tossed the canvas. This May, the Hong Kong low-cost carrier HK Express discontinued air traffic between Hong Kong and Yangon in order "to optimize the use of the airline's resources," said the airline's spokesman.

The low-cost carrier also ran two month services between Mandalay and Hong Kong in September 2016, but the Department of Civil Aviation reported to the Myanmar Times at the end of October due to Mt. Mandalay International Airports' poor jetliners. The Department of Civil Aviation Direc- tion of Civil Aviation of Ambulance U Ne Win said that HK Express had notified the DCA that it suspended scheduled surgeries to Mandalay due to defects in jet fuels at Mandalay International Airpor t.

Cathay Pacific Airways' affiliate, on the other hand, seemed to have survived the wind. Cathay Dragon's information showed that the utilization rate of the latest Yangon HK flight this year is around 75-80 per cent. Cathay Dragon has added an extra 60 aircraft between Myanmar and Hong Kong with these new services.

It is a major in-vestment and a powerful sign that we have faith in the Myanmar market's growing upside. There are only two Cathay and Myanmar National Airlines (MNA) offering air services between the two states. There are MNA departures on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
