About Yangon (Rangoon)
There are many cash machines in Yangon, such as KBZ, BP and AGD banking outlets, a number of hypermarkets, retail centers and large hotel chains, Bogyoke (Scott) Markets and Yangon International Airports. The US dollar, euro and China's currency can be exchanged at most large commercial banking institutions and a variety of currency exchange services in the city centre - or at Yangon Aiport.
When you are in the town centre and want to switch currencies on weekends, there is also a Bogyoke Market (usually closed around 4 pm). Several of the bigger ones also provide currency changes. Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) may have been the culture and commerce of Myanmar in 2005, and most people start and end their trip to the state. In Myanmar, Yangon is a vast town, by far the largest by far, and its run-down attractions merit at least a few day's dig.
It was only in 1885 that Yangon itself became the capitol, when the Brits captured the north of Myanmar and relocated the Mandalay state. Since Yangon's was an important trade center for a long time, however, it has a beautiful series of old houses, many of which are now disintegrated and tucked away in side avenues.
However, the greatest focus is on Strand Road on the riverbank, at the foot of Pansodan Street and Sule Pagoda Road. Yangon's architecture is also colourful and reflects the town' s rich ethnical and worship heritage, but no building is as outstanding as the Shwedagon Pagoda, the huge gold Buddha School that is holy to so many in Myanmar.
It also has a wide variety of musea, arts galeries and fairs where you can get to know Myanmar's cultural life and bargain to your heart's desire. Yangon's architectural fascination is also evident in its rich local cuisines, as well as some of the surrounding Myanmar lands - Thailand, China and India.
It is one of the most secure cities in Asia, and it' s rare for a foreigner to get mugged. However, whatever you do in Yangon, you will find a lively and stunningly welcoming town that is different from anyone else. Watch our YouTube movie from Mahabandoola Garden Park in central Yangon.
