I' m hotel reviewing: Residence of the Governor of Belmond

You can see why the Belmond Governor's Residence has the distinction of being the most enchanting in Yangon from the minute the ancient gong game welcomes you through the doorframes. This luxurious, family-friendly Yangon resort is situated in a tranquil side street in the green ambassador quarter and is set in a colonial-style manor house from the 1920s, where air-cooled verandas and hand-carved tea wood furnishings take you back to the days of Burma's former color.

The luxurious Yangon has 49 large rooms, sumptuous tropic garden, two airy dining rooms, a cosy lounge and a beautiful outdoor sunshade shaded by a beautiful outdoor pools. Yangon's luxurious rooms are accessible via meandering paths along lots of lakes in the tree-lined atrium.

A Deluxe Garden Room was our home for our two-day visit to the Belmond Governor's Residence. This room contained all the mod-cons you would want from a luxurious motel - minibar, safety box, TV with satelite TVs, hair dryer, tea/coffee making facilities, house shoes and robes and a beautiful Fruity Bowl with native Tropic fruits.

Doubtlessly the high point of this family-friendly Yangon resort is the fan-shaped indoor swimmingpool. It' the ideal place to chill out after a warm and sunny days on the bustling Yangon roads, with lots of deck chairs shadowed by Burma's old-fashioned canopies. Particularly we liked the large flat area, which makes it easier for the children to enjoy playing alone, while we watch from our deck chairs.

There' s also a large grass where children can run around and find goose and duck under the shrubs and pond around the area. Peafowls, who wandered at will, were another fountain of intrigues for the children.

Sadly, I didn't have enough in the Governor's Oasis spa, but I had a brief look at the menus, which include a forgiving set of facial and physical treatments using traditionally biological components. Belmond Governor's Residence organizes a free half-day bike trip through Yangon every working days, and they can also organize excursions to neighboring couples, fairs and museum in Myanmar, in order to complement a local cookery course that involves a trip to the Myanmar food fair to buy the local cuisine.

Brakfast at this family-friendly Yangon lodge is on the veranda with a view of the outdoor pools - a quiet way to start the morning before head out into the bustling city centre of Yangon. There are two dining options for lunches and dinners - the Mandalay Restaurant on the ground floor and the Burmese curry table on the upper floor.

On the children's card are all the common crisps like fishy crisps, pastas and chickens. We were disappointed about the restaurant because there was no a la-carte Burma options other than the room servicesmenue. Up in a roomy lounging room with a view of the garden you will find the Myanmar curry table.

You can try a variety of Myanmar food in this refreshingly buffetset, which includes aromatic curry, salad, vegetables, rices and an amazing selection of side orders and sauces. There' s a lot to do with children in Yangon. There are many Stupa, Pagoda and Praise Rooms to explore and it is only a five minutes car ride from the city.

The Downtown Yangon is also only ten minutes by car from the city. For more information on what to do in Yangon, see our Yangon with Children section. Belmond Governor's Residence is a very unique place and we enjoyed coming back to this little Yangon haven after a busy working year.

There is such an enchanting rural environment, and we used to love all the ancient accents in the motel - from the Teakwood furnishings to the astonishing ancient Grammophone in the Tipling Ball. The Governor of Belmond's residence offers not only comfort and charm, but also all the conveniences for a trouble-free stay: there is an ATM at the front desk, free WIFI throughout the entire property and even a private store offering a beautiful selection of goodies and wines.

The employees cared for us so well - they collected our children untiringly to ring the bell at the front desk and organised the transportation and, if desired, extra bed linen. I would definitely suggest the Belmond Governor's Residence if you are looking for a family-friendly luxurious Yangon city.
