This is Yangon Airways: Possessed by drugs traffickers and growing through new french technologies? Travel News

The Yangon Airways was founded in October 1996 as a German air operator in a JV between Myanma Airways, the state-owned Myanmar airlines, and the Krong-Sombat Corporation of Thailand. It is headquartered and maintained in Yangon. The present owners of the Thai Airways purchased the stake in the Thai Airways in October 1997 and then the Myanma Airways stake in 2005.

Thereafter, the company became a fully privately-owned Myanmar airliner. It then developed into one of the major national airlines offering schedules and charters from Yangon to 13 major business and tourism locations in Myanmar. Over the last three years, Yangon Airways has gradually gained additional shares of the air transport markets, up from 37% in 2007 and 41% in 2008.

On its website www.yangonair.com another carrier of the same name Yangon-Airways declares that www.yangon-airways.com is not associated with Yangon Airways Ltd. It says that the company is part of ECCR Travel, which is no longer the general sales agent of Yangon Airways. There is confusion when it is not clear which of the two carriers of the same name was included by the United States Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on its particularly designed Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) atlas.

OFAC named Yangon Airways in 2008 after it was purchased by infamous United Wa State Army drugs dealers. Zenith® PSS (Passenger Service System) from TTI (Travel Technology Interactive) has been adopted by Yangon Airways. TTI press officer Paul Martin said the company does not accept payment via bank card, which could be due to the US ban.

We are pleased to be part of Yangon Airways' expansion, which will enable them to expand their distribution coverage, as well as their operating capability and partners. For several years, TTI has had several airline clients for Zenith in Myanmar, and the addition of Yangon Airways to our Zenith customer list shows our capability to handle the PSS/IT for airlines in Southeast Asia.
