Burma arrests police for Rohingya video abuses | Myanmar News
The Myanmar administration said it has arrested several cops for a video showing cops hitting Muslim Rohingya minorities who have gone astray. Monday's cover in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar about the November 5th event, in which the administration promised to take legal recourse against the offenders, was a scarce formal recognition of the abuse by the Rakhine SSA.
Myanmar's de facto director Aung San Suu Kyi's bureau called four participating officials in the surgery, among them Zaw Myo Htike, who casually looks into the cameras while recording the video of the use. "People who were originally I. D. were arrested," it says in a declaration. "Additional investigation is underway to uncover other policemen who hit the village people in the operation."
And the Rohingya? In Rakhine, UN peacekeeping groups are accusing the Muslim Rohingya minority's Muslim community of abuse, which includes rapes, murders and the cremation of more than 1,000 people. There have been tens of video clips that seem to show abuse against Rohingya Muslims, but this is the first case that the administration says it will take measures against them.
Refugee tales have sounded the worldwide bell and triggered protest against Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been charged with not doing enough to help the Rohingya. Monday's report, quoted by Aung San Suu Kyi's Bureau and the Chinese authorities, did not say what penalty the authorities could face. This self-styled video showed policemen hitting and kicking village people and became virus-free over the week-end, the state press said.
This video, which contains pictures that could worry some observers, shows the cop slapping a little kid around the skull as he goes to tens of village people who sit in lines on the floor, holding each other' s hand behind their beds. Immediately three uniformed officer attack one of the men, beat him with a cane and kick him in the face several times.
One Rohingya campaigner, who had been approached by the AFP press office, said the material had been authenticated by a fugitive from the Shilkhali concentration camps near by.
