Save the Crowns' Jewellery of the'Cinema Series

The Waziya Theatre, the largest of the seven film theatres that once bordered Bogyoke Aung San Road in Yangon, has been ambitiously planned. Waziya Çinema in Yangon city centre is now locked with padlocks; passing a staircase full of salesmen who quickly took up the unoccupied spot, passers-by can hardly take a look inside.

Rumors about an aggressive conservation program, which was originally considered a wishful fantasy, seem to be being fulfilled. Maps have been drawn up to keep the building in place and make it a world-class cinemas and venues with showrooms and schoolrooms. Launched by Yangon Heritage Trust, the U.S. Ambassador and the Myanmar Motion Picture Association, the website owner, the Information Department, has also blessed the MIA.

Waziya, formerly Excelsior, is considered the pride of Yangon's "Cinema Series", a section of Bogyoke Road once bordered by at least seven theaters. The Waziya is the only one still preserved today. Since its construction in the 1920', the Beaux-Arts-style edifice has had about half a dozen survivors and has been a host to Myanmar and major global celebrities, among them the first Hollywood superstar, Douglas Fairbanks, whose exuberant praises for Burmese woman in 1931.

When everything goes according to schedule, the new Waziya will be upgraded with state-of-the-art projections technology and some of its most attractive characteristics - wood railings, ornamental floor covering and a stainless stepped stairway winding up to the projections cabin - will shine again in their pristine brilliance. "Speaking to Frontier, the departing Information Minister U Ye Htut, a self-described classic movie, said: "I believe it will come".

As always, the main problem is the cash, but with a number of viable architectonic designs in the palm of their hands, those involved are "confident that it can be found" given the need for locally and internationally interested in the work. The US Attorney Derek Mitchell has shown great interest in the Waziya renovation and was significantly involved in consulting an city planner and an architecture to evaluate the viability of the site.

Myanmar had one of Asia's most vibrant movie industry from the days of silence until the 1960', culminating in the production of local movies that were shown on more than 300 movie theaters. The" gold age" of the pre-war period produced a plethora of local talents, such as Nyi Pu, an early idol of silence movie, who later directed the Myanmar Motion Picture Organization.

There was strict criticism in the press and the film roles were charged with state-sponsored embassies. One of the most beloved movies of the 1960' s was a Burmese re-make of Walt Disney's "The Parent Trap". The decline in the output of local originals did little to estrange the audience and could have had the unintended effect of arousing a feeling of old-fashionedness among film-makers.

Lack of contents leaves the stations no alternative but to keep old films on television over and over again. The classic songs are still played back on a regular basis and are immediately recognizable to spectators of all age. In 1985 Waziya became a living theater, his initial reincarnation, with decreasing moviemaking. Walking through the "cinema series" bears witness to the cineasts' scare.

In 2014, the neighboring King Cinema on 34-th Street, which according to some city curators was older than Waziya, was torn down, and in its place there is now a rubbish dump with a fence. The fact that it can actually be seen from the stairs of Waziya is a powerful memento of the fact that no place in the fast evolving Yangon is sanctify.

Since its construction in the 1920', the Beaux-Arts-style edifice has had about half a dozen survivors and has been a host to Myanmar and star lets such as the US actress Douglas Fairbanks, whose exuberant praises for Burmese wives inspired a lot in 1931. Once the renovation is complete, it will be the first of its kind in Myanmar and a good place for this part of the community with a common passion for movies and culture.

Philip Jablon, an American who has devoted the last seven years to document such theaters throughout Southeast Asia, said that the desire for conservation in Myanmar could certainly encourage his ASEAN neighbors to engage in similar development that could attract tourism and enhance cultural enrichment in local populations. Jablon has made three study tours to Myanmar and came back this months to exhibit his photos at an exhibit in Yangon city center.

Myanmar's Vanishing Movie Theatre, to be seen at the Myanmar Deitta Gallery from February 20 to March 5, will focus on the countrys unparalleled architectural and cinematographic heritage, where a particularly wealthy film heritage has endured a turbulent 20th cent. Awaziya is one of the last old theaters in Yangon, but Mr. Jablon has recorded about 45 more all over the state.

They can' t all be saved, but while the most breathtaking movie theater in Yangon is shut down for an operation, you can still take a look at what's still remaining and maybe can still be saved.
