Merchants Hotel Yangon in Myanmar renamed as Sule Shangri-La, Yangon
Shangri- 1a Hotels and Resorts announces Traders Hotel, Yangon in Myanmar has been named Sule Shangri-La, Yangon after two and a half years of comprehensive overhaul. Located on Sule Puagoda Road near the over 2,000-year-old listed building, the 484-room hotel has been a permanent feature of the city's main commercial area since it opened in November 1996.
Almost two centuries later, the hotel remains the most sought after meeting place for business people and hotel visitors in Yangon. Yangon, an important harbour in the British Empire, is still marked by its former empire after almost half a hundred years of mourning. Sule Shangri-La, Yangon is the epitome of this story and Myanmar's wealthy cultural heritage, capturing the new brand with a look that combines elegant and sober.
The hotel personnel uniform celebrates Myanmar's colorful past by featuring the large traditionally decorated longgyi (a large scarf pleated into a cylindrically shaped shape) in original style especially created for the hotel. Walking through the open spaces unveils other aspects of the property's culture with high, artfully decorated Myanmar vase, wood carved windows and custom artwork by indigenous artist such as Ba Khine and Hla Phone Aung, whose artwork adorns the hotel's cafe, meeting rooms and suite.
It is a window to display the work of art isans and artisans, and their work is a display of Burma's rich history. The hotel's restaurant and lounge offers a wide selection of restaurant and lounge facilities. Renovations of the hotel include the three other locations - Café Sule for foreign flavors and Asia's favorites; the Peacock Lounge, an informal place for exchange between business leaders and guests, and the gourmet shop with fresh bakery products, sweets and drinks.
The Health Club, immersed in daylight, with a view of the open-air swimming baths, has an extended area of over 850 m² with gym facilities, saunas, steam rooms and massages. Sule Shangri-La, Yangon's conference rooms - regularly hosting delegates and celebrities - extend over three floors and have been renovated in a contemporary range with golden highlights.
There are 484 remodeled guest rooms in the hotel with large panoramic window framing the town, the stream or the Shwedagon Pagoda. The top storey of the hotel features three redesigned apartments overlooking the town of Yangon or the Yangon river. Comprised between 66 and 189 sq. m., the complex, which includes the city's biggest president's residence, is comfortable and spacious enough to relax and work in its own area.
