The Yangon region comprises 9 Yangon region ministerial bodies (one of whom is named mayor of Yangon), general administrative bureaus and the Hluttaw (regional assembly). It is financed by the Union Governments and is in charge of the implementation of the Union Governments policy. The YCDC has town hall headquarters and town councils throughout the town.
Mayor of Yangon is chairman of the YCDC. The YCDC is non-governmental and increases its own revenue through taxes, royalties, licenses and real estate developmen. It is subdivided into four districts (North, South, East and West), each managing 7-10 townships. Bezirksamter amter have a strictly coordinating and administrating role.
Every municipality has its own administration bureau (administered by the Ministry of the Interior), which is in charge of all facets of the municipality. The municipal authorities levy the municipal drink taxes and the income goes to the government of the Union. Every Township is subdivided into Wards. District councils are tightly integrated into the life of the surrounding population - birth and death are recorded here, driver's licences are requested, and they even supply credentials for employer to certify that the nominee has no reported welfare offences.
The town is subdivided into four districts for administration reasons - Western /Down, Eastern, North and Southern. Every district is further subdivided into townships: This is one of the wealthiest townships, among them the districts of Svetunggya ("Golden Valley") and Inya Myaing, the Bogyoke Aung San Museum, the Sasana Centre and the Kokkhine Swimming Club and art galleries.

Before moving to Naypyidaw, Yankin was the site of a number of departments.
