Tikal

city and ceremonial center of the ancient Mayan civilization. It is a large archaeological site in the Guatemalan department of Petén. From our jungle base at Black Rock in Belize we travelled to Tikal.

It was the capitol of a conquering state that became one of the most mighty empires of the Maya. 5 ] Although the monuments of the town date back to the fourth millennium B.C., Tikal peaked in classical times around 200 to 900 AD.

After the end of the Tikal Classic no new main memorials were erected and there are indications that some of the city' s top buildings were war-torn. Tikal and Calakmul are both close to the centre.

kinik ehb'? seems to have had a decisive influence on Tikal policy. At the beginning of the sixth millennium another king ruled the town, known only as "Lady of Tikal", most likely a Chak Tok Ich'aak II. was born. Kaloomte' B'alam was the first of them, who had a long general at Tikal before becoming co-regent and 19. in the Dynasty series.

Tikal's wife herself seems not to have been included in the dynasty numbers. He was also one of the main reasons why Tikal was the first national park in Guatemala. Part of Tikal has been renovated by the University of Pennsylvania and the Govt. of Guatemala. Below is a list of the most important steles in Tikal:
