The Three Gorges Dam

Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric power plant spanning the Yangtze River near the town of Sandouping in the Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei Province, China. Drei-Schluchten Dam is the world's largest hydropower project and the best-known dam. Yangtse (Chang Jiang) dam west of the city of Yichang in Hubei Province, China.

The Yangtze River dam was initially planned by Sun Yat-sen in The International Development of China in 1919. 19 ][20] He explained that a dam with an output of 30 million HP (22 GW) was possible down the Three Gorges. In 1932 the Nazi regime under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek began the preparatory work for the projects in the Three Gorges.

The Otani Project was designed for the dam in expectation of a Japan' s triumph over China. The United States Bureau of Reclamation Chief Constructor John L. Savage inspected the area in 1944 and proposed a dam for the Yangtze River Project. Originally, the dam was designed to use a one-of-a-kind way of transporting vessels; the vessels would enter the lower and higher end of the dam in sluices, and then rope-hifts would move the vessels from one sluice to the next.

Completion of the Three Gorges Dam will provide around 100 Ttwh of energy per year. The National Development and Reform Commission of China states that 366 grammes of coals would generate 1 kilowatt hour of energy in 2006. At full capacity, Three Gorges will reduce the use of coals by 31 million tons per year and avoid 100 million tons of GHG emissions,[72] million tons of particulate matter, one million tons of sulphur dioxides, 370,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, 10,000 tons of CO and a significant amount of quicksilver.

73 ] Hydropower is saving the power needed to mine, clean and move the North Chinese coals. There are three consequences of the lack of sludge downstream: Wuhan, a town of eight million inhabitants, was flooded for more than three month, and the Jingguang Railway was out of operation for more than 100 of them.

Each year during the drought period between December and March, the dam unloads its dam. In contrast to the three to four hour journey through the sluices, the boat elevator requires 30 to 40 mins. to pass through. 115 ] It was debugged in December 2015 and completed in January 2016.
