Bhutan's biggest metropolis, Thimphu (; Dzongkha: ??????[t?imp?u]; formerly known as Thimbu[1] or Thimpu[2]) is the principal town of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Located in the west center of Bhutan, the nearby village is one of the Bhutan Delta's main districts, the Thimphu District. In 1955 the old Punakha metropolis was superseded by Thimphu, and in 1961 His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck proclaimed Thimphu the metropolis of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

It stretches north-south along the western shore of the river Raid?k, which in Bhutan is known as Wang Chuu or Thimphu Chuu. It is the 4th highest metropolis in the whole wide range from 2,248 meters (7,375 feet) to 2,648 meters (8,688 feet).

3 ][4][5][6][7] What is unusual for a capitol is that Thimphu does not have its own international airports, but depends on Paro International Airports 54 kilometers away, which is linked by a roads. As Bhutan's centre of politics and economy, Thimphu has a predominant farming and animal basis that accounts for 45% of the country's GDP.

The Thimphu contains the most important politic monuments in Bhutan, among them the National Assembly of the reformed democratic Parliament and the Dechencholing Palace, the King's formal palace, in the northern part of the town. The Thimphu is co-ordinated by the "Thimphu Structural Plan", an urban development plan developed in 1998 to protect the sensitive ecological environment of the area.

Bhutan's cultural life is mirrored in Thimphu in literary, religious, customary and nationwide clothing, and in the abbey's abbey traditions, as well as musical, dancing and medial expression. The Tshechu is an important celebration when masque dancing, commonly called Cham dancing, is staged in the inner yards of Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu.

Prior to 1960, Thimphu was a group of villages spread across the valleys, among them Motithang, Changangkha, Changlimithang, Langchupakha and Taba, some of which now form quarters of the town ( see below for county details). 9 ] In 1885 a fight took place on today's Changlimithang athletic field in Thimphu.

Ugyen Wangchuck, the first king of Bhutan, who practically controlled the whole land, was opened by the crucial victor. Since then, the sport field has been of great importance to the town, where soccer, crime and bow shooting tournaments take place. In 1952 it was decided to move the capitol from the old Punakha to Thimphu.

1961 Thimphu became the official Bhutan ese town. The Thimphu has a rainy period that lasts from May to September and a drought that lasts the rest of the year. Bhutan's Royal Union of Bhutan (known as the RUB), based in the town, was founded in 2003. 105 ][106] This institution comprises several universities, among them the Institute for Languages and Cultures Studies (ILCS), which trains Bhutanese native speakers, cultural and traditionalists in Simtokha Dzong.
