Mastercard says Thailand is the most visited tourist country in the Asia-Pacific region. Last year, Thailand was the most favoured tourist country in the region, with three of its towns ranked among the top ten in the MasterCard Asia Pacific Destinations Index 2015. The MasterCard survey shows that Bangkok was the most favoured place for arrival, accommodation and overall spending, and that it is mainly the result of information from local tourist authorities.

MasterCard says the poll is predicated on 167 targets from 22 Asian-Pacific nations and represents 90.1 per cent of all worldwide nights spent in the area. In 2015, the Thai capitol recorded 21.9 million guests staying internationally, an increase of 28.6 per cent over the previous year, according to MasterCard. "The Asia Pacific Destinations Index 2015 shows the continuing strength of the Thai tourist industry, with Bangkok rebounding," said Matthew Driver, Asia Pacific Group executive of the Global products & solution business at MasterCard.

Thailand's tourist industries have been very robust despite the challenge of the bomb attack in Bangkok last August, which claimed 20 lives and wounded more than 120 more. Famed for delicious road meals and labyrinthine supermarkets, Bangkok's tourist spend was 107 million overnight stays and 15.2 billion dollars in 2015, according to the Destinations Index.

Both Phuket and Pattaya were also among the ten most visited tourist destinations, with a 15.5 per cent and 10 per cent increase in 2015 compared to the previous year. With 11.8 million guests staying in Singapore, it ranked second among the most visited towns, although far from Bangkok. The third most favored target of the index was Tokyo (11.8 million), followed by Malaysia's capitol Kuala Lumpur (11.3 million).

These numbers have been round up to one point, so Singapore and Tokyo seem to have the same number of visitors..... In 2015 Seoul had the second highest tourism spending after Bangkok with 14.4 billion dollars, followed by Singapore with 14.1 billion dollars. The places where the visitors went to visit were Shanghai and Beijing: on Tuesday, 269 and 262 dollars per day respectively.

The Asia-Pacific tourist sector outpaced Europe in the year 2014 in absolute figures in relation to the overall GDP share, according to figures from the World Tourism und Travel Council. To date, the European tourist sector in the Asia-Pacific region has made a significant progress. Continental China tourist, especially in Chiba, Osaka, Tokyo, Hokkaido, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, said MasterCard. Mr Driver said the Asia Pacific Destinations Index can help companies and government companies better understanding and anticipating their tourist needs to secure the sector's sustainability.

"That is becoming more and more important as the number of tourists continues to grow, because with the present rate of increase, the Asia-Pacific region will attract more than 500 million tourists by 2020," he said.
