The journey by rail from Thailand to Malaysia takes place with normal coaches. Compatibilities are available from both the eastern and western shores of Malaysia. Travellers to Thailand must leave the Kereta Api Tanah Melayu (KTM) Railway (Malaysian Railway) at the border to Padang Besar and change to a State Railway of Thailand railroad, which then continues towards Hat Yai and ends in Bangkok.
Travelers can travel by coach or sharing cab from Kota Bharu to the border city of Rantau Panjang from the eastern shore (approx. 30 minutes): It is a brief stroll across the border, entry procedures and then by trimshaw to the railway terminal at Sungai Golok, where the coaches to Hat Yai take the next stage to get to Bangkok.
