Thailand/Burma border area
Burma (or Myanmar) is one of the longest civilian conflicts in the history of the nation, which began after its sovereignty in 1948. Fights between Burma's opposition groups and the Myanmar army continue in many areas, among them the Karen state in the east, which now ranks second only to Afghanistan for landmines. During the decade long warmongering process several hundred thousand refugees were displaced from their houses and live in Thai border camps. 2.
Sangkhlaburi county in northern Thailand has 47,000 inhabitants, half of whom come from ethnical groups, among them those expelled from the neighboring Karen state. The Karen, with a total of over 7 million inhabitants, are more than a mere majority, they have all the basic characteristics of a country, as well as its own past, languages, culture, country and economy.
Karen are inherently easy, co-operative, honest, modest and peace-loving. In Thailand, about 140,000 Karen migrants live in refugee camp. Some 50,000 Karen returnees have been relocated to America, Canada, Australia and Europe. Thailand's authorities have made several efforts to return Karen returnees who live within the Thai border to Burma.
Karen Revolution is more than just a fight for surviving the repression, exploit and rule of the Burma government. The Karen have been calling for freedom over an autonomous Karen state since 1976.
