Heaven enlightens at the Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Festival

Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Festival is an unforgettable time. This festival is held every year around the full lunar of Burma's eighth months of the year in the Shan city of Taunggyi, Myanmar. The festival will take place this year from 3 to 5 November.

If you want to be in the area at this season, you should definitely allow for at least one festival date. Practically everyone will come to the festival. Throughout the three days of the festival, the festival will take place with colourful hot-air balloons that will be released throughout the year.

Every day 20-30 animals are emitted. But it becomes a very different nighttime adventure. Village members from all over Myanmar meet in groups to create large, artistically ornamented, colourful ballons. And when we say a balloon, think fireballs on a steroid. Although all of them are nice to look at, some come with an additional risk that keeps the audience on their feet.

Some of the hot air balloons have a firework display under them and are equipped with timers that allow the hot air balloons to rise in altitude before the firework display goes off. Then be ready to run, as the firework can fall on the people. If you are positioned to keep your distances from the balloon, you should be sure, but still be able to walk in some of them.

Around the festival area there are also many stands for eating and drinking. It is full of sound and colourful, illuminated giant bikes driven by young, energy-packed men who turn the bikes with their mass.
