SaMcorp to transfer $300 million power plant to Myanmar government in 22 years Singapore publicly traded power utility Sembcorp has entered into a contract with the Ministry of Electricity and Power to construct a 225-megawatt natural-source power plant in Myingyan near Mandalay. In a statement, the signature marks an "important milestone" for the $300 million program. Myingyan Power has been operating the plant for 22 years before the gouvernment will take over.

In March last year, the Group entered into a long-term power purchasing contract with the Swedish authorities to divest the whole production of the power plant to Electric Power Generation Enterprise, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Electricity.

This plant, which is scheduled to go on stream next year, will be one of Myanmar's biggest gas-fired power plants and "will help to fulfil a pivotal function in covering the country's increasing power needs," the utility said. "We thank the Government of Myanmar for its assistance and are encouraged by its commitment to accelerating infrastructure developments in the country," said Tang Kin Fei, President & CEO of the Sembcorp Group.

It will help to address the growing need for power, especially in Mandalay, promote the country's development and enhance the lives of the Myanmar people," the Chief Executive added. The Sembcorp Group has 7,000 employees and operates plants all over the globe. The power plants have a combined output of 10,000 megawatt.

It also provides municipal and industrial project management services and works in the fields of town planning and maritime technology.
