. Its name is a reference to its historical location as "The Eastern Bank" of the Huangpu River, which runs through the centre of Shanghai, although it is now managed as the Pudong New Area, a new state area extending to the Seychelles.

Pudong's historical area is now home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and Shanghai Stock Exchange as well as many of Shanghai's most famous properties, including the Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Shanghai Tower. Located directly in front of Puxi's historical alliance, a relic of earlier international licences in China.

Other new areas include Shanghai Harbour, Shanghai Expo and Century Park, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve and Shanghai Disney Resort. Formerly founded between 1958 and 1961, Pudong was divided between Huangpu, Yangpu, Nanshi, Wusong and Chuanshacounties. On October 1, 1992, the initial area of Pudong and Chuansha counties was amalgamated and Pudong New Area was founded. 1993 the China goverment created a special economic zone in Chuansha, thus establishing the Pudong New Area.

Lujiazui was called the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and has become a finance center of contemporary China. A number of prominent structures were erected, among them the Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building and the Shanghai World Finance Center 494 meters (1,621 ft) and the Shanghai Tower (expected to be 565.6 meters or 1,856 ft).

All of these properties - all along Century Avenue and viewable from the historical Bund - are now the most frequent skyline in Shanghai. It was announced on 6 May 2009 that the State Council agreed to the suggestion to consolidate Nanhui District with Pudong and to create the East Shanghai Post. Pudong hosted the most important Shanghai Expo events in 2010, the site of which now forms a large open area.

The Pudong New Area consists of the pristine Pudong County (north-eastern part of Shanghai County), Chuansha County and Nanhui County. The administrative areas of the directly supervised Shanghai community are on the same administrative levels as the prefectural area. The Pudong administration, however, has a subprovincial urban statute, half a plain above a prefectural town.

That is due to Pudong's greatness and importance as China's finance centre. Pudong Communist Parties Secretary is the highest post in the county, followed by the Pudong government mayor. Pudong is usually also a member of the Shanghai Permanent Committee. The Pudong is the most densely populated part of Shanghai.

Pudong's demographic increase is well above the country wide averages, as it is a favourite refuge. Especially the region recorded an increase of 189. 5 ] The districts real demographic decline is when immigrant populations are expelled, so that migration is the sole driver of it.

Approximately 3/4 of the inhabitants are living in the north part of the town centre, the "Northern Territory". The 1/4 are living in the "Southern Territory", the district of Nanhui. A number of districts in the historic centre of the town have seen a decline in their populations. Foreign Colleges Pudong's business activity expanded with the merging of the Nanhui district in May 2009.

In addition to the Lujiazui Trading and Finance Area, there is the Waigaoqiao Free Commerce Area, the biggest free trading area on the Chinese continent with an area of about 10 sqm. in the northeast of Pudong. Jinqiao Export Processing Area is another large 19 km2 industry area in Pudong and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park is a specialist area for technology-oriented companies.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport opened its gates in 1999 and shortened the travelling times for passengers. Line 2 of Shanghai Metro went into operation in the same year. There are also other routes, namely 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 16, which operate parts of Pudong.

Since 2004, a maglev railway has been running between the LONGYANG RAD and the LONGYANG RAD. The city is linked to Puxi by several galleries and four large footbridges. Waihuan Tunnelling, part of the Shanghai Outer Ring Express. Streets in Pudong have no special length or width orientations.

The main roads Pudong Avenue, Zhangyang and Yanggao Roads run east-west to Yangpu Bridge before they run slowly north-south. The Yanggao Highway stretches southwards to the A20, Shanghai's external ring highway, which starts east-west from the Xupu Bridge and starts at the intersection near Renxi Village when the east-west highway merges with Yingbin Avenue, which leads to Pudong International Airport.
