The town of Pathein, formerly known as Bassein, is the capitol of the Ayeyarwady Division and is located near the riverbank. It' also the 4th largest town in Burma. Jeroen & Dafne The ride through the town is simple and there are plenty of cabs, motorcycle cabs and trickshaws.
Pathein was an important trade center for Indians and Arabs in the past. There' s still a flourishing industrial sector in the town today, and it is known for its manufacture of nice, ornamental and colorful canopies. The town also has a large ricemaking plant. Besides being home to Burma's residents, the town is also home to large Rakhine and Karen community.
As you walk through the town you will see a large number of old stone-built houses. Walking along the promenade is very enjoyable, and the town has a really quiet and quiet atmoshere. The town has many buddhistic churches. Some of the secluded sandy beach is within walking distance and you are not too far from woods and scrub.
The town has a choice of mid-range accommodation and a good choice of fine dining.
