Pathein in Myanmar is known for its colourful parasols made by craftsmen, and the city is also known all over the world for its potteries and flashy crafts such as pots and cans. Pathein is a tropic city of monsoons according to the Koppen-Klassification.

There are many renowned buddhistic churches in Pathein. Its most popular place is the Shwemokhtaw Pagoda, a buddhistic shrine erected in 305 BC by King Asoka of India (as a folk legend). Now 47 metres high, the first level is almost 14 lbs of massive bullion, the second level is composed of unadulterated sterling and the third of bronce with 829 jewels, 843 jewels and 1588 semi-precious rocks, the second enchanting place you should not miss is the Mawdin Pagoda, which is located at the estuary of the Pathein River.

Most of the year this is an inaccessible area, but during the Tabodwe Moon Monday, the area becomes rejoicing over its vast celebration of pagodas. There are regular boat trips from Pathein at this point and it is likely that they will make a daily excursion here to participate in the opening of the village to satisfy the wishes of the pilgrims.
