Outer Hebrides (), also known as the Western Isles (Scottish Gaelic: Na h-Eileananan Siar[n? n? ??i??] or Na h-Eileananan an Iar[n??helan?n ???i??]), Innse Gall ("Islands of Strangers") or the Long Isle or the Long Iceland (Scottish Gaelic: A t-Eilean Fada), is a string of islands off the western shore of the Scottish continent....

N.B. 1: The islands are geographical co-extensive with Comhairle nano Eilean Siar, one of Scotland's 32 unified areas. It is part of the Hebrides Islands, divided from the Highlands of Scotland and the Inner Hebrides by the Minch, Little Minch and Hebrides Sea.

The majority of the islands have a foundation of old methamorphic rock and the weather is temperate and ocean. There are 15 populated islands with a combined number of 27,000[3] and more than 50 vast islets. A number of important protohistoric monuments exist, many of which precede the first writings of Romans and Greeks on the islands.

The islands were then taken over by chief clans, the majority of whom were MacLeods, MacDonalds, Mackenzies and MacNeils. Maritime traffic is vital and there are many ferries between the islands and the Scottish continent. Three of Scotland's forty Scottish Islands Conservation Areas (NSAs) are situated here, reflecting the island's landscape characteristics.

The three NSAs within the Outer Hebrides are: Besides the large North Ford (Oitir Mhòr) and South Ford causeeways, which link North Uist with Benbecula via the north of the Grimsays, and another causeeway from Benbecula with South Uist, several other islands are connected by smaller causeeways or smaller bridging roads.

11 ][40][41] This means that all populated islands are now linked to at least one other by an overland trafficway. øy significance "island" eileaneilein, øyanan from the nordic øy significance "island" sgeirsgeireanskerryskerry; often referred to a cliff or cliff sunk at high water.

Seaforths.... had done much besides the establishment of an ordered government on the isle... to save humans from the abyss of unknowingness and discourtesy into which they were sunk. 101 ] A new age of Hebrew participation in the rest of the earth's business began.

When the Union Treaty was implemented in 1707, the Hebrides became part of the new Kingdom of Great Britain, but the clan's loyalty to a faraway sovereign was not hefty. Quite a number of islanders "came out" in aid of the Jacobite Count of Mar in the "15", although the reaction to the rise of 1745 was depressed.

That may have made the islands peaceful, but in the following centuries it had a horrible cost. Scotland's recent referenda on independency has prompted some insular residents to call for a discussion on the constitutionality of the Western Isles, which is associated with similar moves in Orkney and Shetland. Regular connections between the Outer Hebrides and Scotland and the Inner Hebrides run on the following routes:
