Dailyhunt's trip from classifieds to news aggregate
Virendra Gupta saw a possible commercial possibility in the Indian-speaking press after almost 13 years in businesses, especially in the telecommunications industry. Gupta established Verse Innovation for Value-Added Service (VAS) in 2007 and partnered with top telecommunications operators to deliver text messaging notifications.
After five years of taking over Newshunt (now Dailyhunt) in 2012, Gupta and his crew staged a small ad firm to a news aggregate to deliver local voice messages and other contents. This was unavoidable as the VAS eco-system began to fail with businesses such as Verse Innovations, which deliver consumer contents such as ring tones, audio and images and share revenues via digital files with telecommunications operators, in the face of legal fears about the proliferation of spamming and the increasing use of the wireless web.
"As we ran the former (mobile VAS) store and provided text messaging of information via text messages about information via job, real estate, marriages and messages in the native tongue, our primary goal back then was to provide useful information to all. We didn't have any phone information, only text messages and USSD (unstructured additional information )," recalls Gupta, 45, in an interviewee.
Mr Gupta says it was like switching to a business-to-consumer (B2C) enterprise after it started as a business-to-business (B2B) enterprise working with telecoms to deliver contents to telecommunications-clients. Verse Innova-tion purchased the NJN News aggregate Newshunt in 2012, a small start-up that had a Nokia application mainly for Nokia cell phones and Android was in the process.
As a result, the enterprise became a news generator in the respective national languages. "So we have aggregate contents and entered users via SMS and USSD to distinguish between different contents," says Gupta. "When the land was moving away from carrier contextservices and WiFi and information became widespread, we were working with Newshunt in the respective national languages at that point in the game.
That was when we began working with Newshunt, an app that aggregate news contents in the native language," said Gupta. Indo-European contents had already begun to establish themselves in 2008. This year Rediff.com, one of India's early research and e-mail companies, began to offer its e-mail and other e-mail related web pages in 22 different Hindi dialects.
As early as next year, in 2009, the online giant Google and Facebook entered the Indian-speaking world. In May 2009, Google put a translation app on the web that allows Hindi input via an Anglophone keypad, and Facebook has introduced an online surfing experience in six Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu as well.
As part of its efforts to expand its leadership force, Dailyhunt recently named Umang Bedi, former MD of Facebook India, as Chairman. Newsshunt had already begun expansion into India before Verse Innovation purchased it in 2012. One year before the takeover, Newshunt 2011 launches an Android application based on the early Sybian platforms.
Newshunt took the plunge into the e-books of the Android application with a new administration group in four different Indic tongues - India, Malayalam, Tamil and Marathi besides English. By 2015, Newshunt was renamed Dailyhunt, requiring a comprehensive redesign of both the look and the front of the game. It had a personalised feedback page, preferred tagging, a new UI and supports other Hindi language versions, namely Assamese, Sindhi, Nepali and Bhojpuri.
"We, Dailyhunt, are an Indian-speaking Corporation. We' ve only just begun to adopt contents in German. About 95% of the usage on our website is non-English contents. This is the only Indian and we have concentrated on it and we believe it is a very large market," said Gupta.
"Next 200-300 million people who will come to the web will only come in your language. And, since we are a publishing house, I don't think that just translating a transactional page into Hindi really will work. We are a consumer goods and the way text is created and displayed in our own text is very closely related to the user," he added.
The Dailyhunt expanded not only by the addition of new tongues and the search for new publishing houses. As with any on-line news aggregate, he had to find ways to display Indic text on portable monitors and see what his audience would like to see through analysis. Verse Innovation purchased BuyT, a detection and recommender in 2015 to develop a recommender machine for Dailyhunt people.
In addition, the business used assets from the transaction to create a fully integrated indigenous online marketing and monetisation solution. Prior to being renamed Dailyhunt in 2015, the business generated most of its revenues from selling eBooks and other small contents. Please be aware that both Vauntz and BuyT were purchased from the former Newshunt trademark prior to the rebrand.
Perhaps the company's most important asset was Vauntz, as Dailyhunt needed a kernel analysis search that could understand what the consumer was listening to in near-realtime. Dailyhunt can thus generate a personalised newsfeed for the user on the basis of their previous interests. It would be hard for an online business to keep clients without showing the user what is important.
They can make changes to your products without going through a policy set by someone else, instead you can just count on users' input to make changes to your application," said Gupta. "There has been a dramatic change in the way the business thinks (after the move from the VAS markets to wireless applications).
Dailyhunt has overcome many obstacles in the contents sector over the years. In fact, the entire area of the contents sector developed rapidly as the web became more widespread in the nation, and even news consumers themselves began to move through it. According to Gupta, the issues of basic tasks like rendered Indian text, when Dailyhunt began as a Symbol application, have quickly shifted.
Portable applications need a great deal of bandwith to download contents onto a single machine. The Dailyhunt was content-intensive and the second largest obstacle was sluggish and incomplete weblinks. Also, when Dailyhunt was launched in early 2012, people had smaller cell telephones with very little storage space and that restricted the way the application saved and accessed it.
However, when the smart phone market began to bring high-end mobiles to market at low cost, and when the price of wireless low, Dailyhunt experienced a boom. In the course of years Dailyhunt began to solve very different issues as it added more and more publishing houses and new people. To date, the application has over 50 million Android, Windows and iPhone subscribers, with news items from over 650 publishing houses in 14 different Indian language versions.
"Now, as people began to incriminate themselves, the issue was how to provide a personalised environment for every other individual who signed in to the site and for every other one. This became a play of personalisation and curating the contents by means of mechanical teaching. And, if you try to do this with the locale will exacerbate the issue 10x because you need to comprehend what the contents taxonomy is, what the tag is.
You have to be able to see the preference of your customers on the basis of their clicks," said Gupta. "Since we do not request any log-in information, we do not have any information about you, as this must be smooth for the end-customer. We refine the contents on the basis of the user's experiences and his or her clicking, we are able to recognize and use well-written posts, trend posts, current news and other posts that the visitor enjoys in order to create a feedback for him or her.
With the shift in on-line use, publishing houses were faced with the challenge of expanding their sales channels among on-line portals, and the largest one turned out to be so-cial. Facebook and Twitter have become an important target for both consumer and news publishing companies, but these portals also restrict the range of publishing houses to their readership.
Print-news outlet companies, which have recognized the unavoidable changes, have begun to invest more funds in on-line. At the same them had to pay more for the production of electronic contents to make them accessible to the user of interactive materials and to hire journalists and teamworkers. In 2016, Pew Research investigated how regularly subscribers of various forms of news consume it.
The study found that 66% of the Facebook user surveys received their messages on the website itself, while 59% of the Twitter user surveys consume messages on Twitter themselves. Pew Research also pointed out in its 2016 survey that a 64% of respondents found messages only on Facebook, while the remainder were used by other online communities.
Dailyhunt, however, solves the issue of distributing contents by functioning only as a means of distributing them and not directly influencing publishing houses, says Gupta. Newscasters are free to enter into agreements and terminate them on their own conditions with Dailyhunt. He said that several publishing houses have terminated agreements with him in the past and will return after a while.
"We are a monopoly on digital publishing, and in our case we partner directly with publishing houses, generating volume and sharing with them. The amount of analytic information and information we provide to publishing houses is much higher than what is communicated by corporate communications," he said.

That means that the trend in the use of contents in German will also have an impact on the Indian-speaking population. With the advent of new file types such as GIF, sound and video, most major news organizations such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and others have adopted these new file types. "Advertisement money is moving from a global monetisation prospect to digitally and on the move and so and so.....
While it' s shifting, I think we are one of the few contentplayers who have proven that they are generating a big deal on the mobil. If the number of funnels and tolling stations for electronic advertisements rises, we will be well placed to take advantage of this," Gupta added.
