????[?mikonos]) is a small part of the Cyclades, located between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. It covers an area of 85 hectares. The population is 10,134 (2011 census), most of them living in the biggest city of Mykonos on the western shore. It is also known as Chora (i.e. the ancient city that follows the customary practices in Greece when the name of the islands itself coincides with the name of the capital).
During the Roman Empire Mykonos came under the Roman domination and became part of the Byzantine Empire until the end of the twelfth cenury. 1204, with the case of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade, Mykonos was invaded by Andrea Ghisi, a relation of the Doge of Venice.
It was devastated by the Catalans at the end of the thirteenth centuries and in 1390 it was handed over to Venice. While the Venetians still ruled in 1537, Mykonos was under attack by Hayreddin Barbarossa, the awesome admin of Suleiman the Magnificent, and an Ottoman navy settled on the isle.
By the end of the eighteenth centuries, Mykonos was flourishing as a commercial center, drawing not only pirates but also numerous foreigners from neighbouring isles. The Battle of Mykonos was held in June 1794 in the Isle' s principal port between English and France vessels. In 1821 the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire erupted and Mykonos took on an important part, headed by the Greek hero Manto Mavrogenous.
In 1830 Greece became an independant state. It covers an area of 85 hectares. There are no rivulets on the peninsula, but rather a number of torrents, two of which have been transformed into dams. Most of the land is granitic and the ground is very craggy with many areas that have been degraded by the powerful wind.
High-grade clays and barite, a petroleum lubricating aggregate, were extracted from the east side of Mykonos by the end of 1900. Mykonos Archaeological Museum - was constructed in 1905 to accommodate the finds from the Putrefaction Pit of 425/426 BC, found in 1898 on the island of Rheneia by D. Stavropoulos.

Mykonos was the location of the 1975 movie Iceland of Death, produced by Nico Mastorakis. The year 2015 saw Mastorakis return to the islands to visit the places again.
