by myawaddy to mawlamyine - Touragent says that the street is hazardous? I asked Myanmar Tours this weekend to arrange a Myawaddy to Mawlamyine vehicle - and I had an answer that it is not possible to drive from Myawaddy to Mawlamyine by vehicle because the roads are too unsafe. Anyone have any up-to-date information on how simple it is to get to Myawaddy and find transportation on the same time?

I know that there is a coach, but only every other night, and I think that the days we want to get there (a Tuesday in early April) will be a rest days..... we don't really want to stay one or two days in Myawaddy to await a coach the next night, as we only have a few week for our itinerary.

Hello, we drove from Mae Sot to Mawlamyine in April this year - the roads were good and the journey was fantastic. There were many vehicles for rent (which we did) or to rent a cab in the city.

Riding was at one point hair-raising, as it was a single-lane street with a precipitous abyss on one side - but automobiles, lorries and busses are always passing anyway..... the most difficult thing was to find out on which days the car would be driven westward from Myawaddy when the car parked (east on one side, westward on the other).

and although there are postings on different pages of the journey with wide ranging messages like "traffic goes eastwards on even dates, westwards on uneven days" (or the other way around), this differs according to whether there are 30 or 31 dates a months - so it's not that easy.

We' ve worked out the right date to go westward by asking other travelers via our trip pages what date they had traveled westward a few weeks/months before our trip, and then calculated the east/west holidays in the coming few week. Our passes had to be shown a few time, but that was not so different from other trips in Burma.

The journey to Mae Sots took longer than anticipated because the busses from Sukhothai and Tak were apparently full and we had to waiting several hour after the departure from Sukhothai to Tak until we could get on a continuation coach from Tak - but this may have been due to a deadly coach accident on the Tak-Mae Sots stretch, which caused the bigger busses to be taken off the roads at that part.

All in all I would suggest to take Myawaddy - Mawlamyine Street as it is a great initiation into Burma and (at the beginning of this year anyway) has definitely gone off the beaten path. myawaddy to mawlamyine - route agency says street is hazardous?
