More than 90 refugees return to Burma from Thailand
Karen state authorities have made provisions for the repatriation of over 90 Myanmar migrant workers from Thai shelters. Ninety-six persons from 19 Myanmar homes, who for various reason live in Thai border shelters, will be returning on October 25.
Karen Prime Minister Nan Khin Htwe Myint on 15 October reviewed preparations for the provisional camp for returnees on Kyauk Lone Gyi Pagoda Road in Myawaddy, Karen State. Myanmar and Thailand worked together to organize the returnees' returns after some of the returnees who live in the Nu Po camp and other centres on the Thailand side of the Burma frontier had expressed interest in going back to Burma.
More than 93,000 returnees live in seven Karen refugee centres on the Thai side of the Burmese Thai-Britary. Karen Committee for Refugees (KRC), which is representing the returnees in the centres, has a policy of relocation, but according to the KRC, the group of returnees who are due to come back on 25 October is voluntary.
Out of the 19 homecoming hostages, 17 will move to a makeshift camps in Myawaddy and officers will organize the relocation of the other two in Chin State and Magway region. Karen The Karen Family Welfare Department said they will work with UNICEF and Saving the Children to help those who will be in Myawaddy for a while to meet their medical, education, social, physiological and psychological needs.
It is the first reintroduction scheme for the return of migrants from the frontier area administered by the Thai and the Burmese governmen.
