Privatebanks raise interest rate

Several of the 22 locally owned retail bankers are starting this months to offer higher interest payments on bank overdrafts. Myanmar's central bank (CBM) recently revised its interest rate to contain it. The interest rate for the funding, however, has not yet altered. CBM increased the interest rate on deposits by between 8 and 13 percent.

The Myawaddy Bank offers the highest interest rate for owners of permanent and floating accounts with 8.5 per-cent for a 3 months investment and 8.76 per-cent for 12 moths. The interest rate for floating accounts is 9 per-cent per annum for one monthly period and 10 per-cent for firm saving.

The Asia Green Development Bank has so far provided interest on standard saving deposits. Now it offers 10 percent on permanent saving account for one year. Ayeyarwady, Kanbawza, Cooperative, United Amara, Myanmar Small Loan, Myanmar Oriental and Innwa Bank have also raised interest payments on saving deposits. The client should not mix up the yearly and weekly installments, warned Thet Ko Ko Ko Myo, Kanbawza's assistant generaldirector.
