Myanmar Charity Aid (4 May 2018) - Myanmar
I announce today that the Government of Australia is continuing to provide aid to meet the needs of the victims of human crisis in Myanmar, the states of Rakhine and Kachin included. According to UN estimations, more than 830,000 Burmese need relief, among them about 500,000 Rohingya in the state of Rakhine. Rohingya is still dependent on human aid to live, as strict limitations hinder its entry to basic livelihoods and basic needs.
In addition, the government is worried about the increased hostilities in Kachin State, which has driven more than 5,000 refugees since the beginning of April. It is a serious concern for the security and welfare of more than 100,000 refugees in Kachin and Shan states. Australia's government is calling on all political groups to stop the struggles, save the civil population and allow the provision of human aid to the affected municipalities.
Through trustworthy human aid organisations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Save the Children Australia, Australia will contribute $13 million to address pressing needs throughout Myanmar. For Rakhine State, our assistance will help bring primary healthcare to 50,000 beneficiaries, enable 18,000 to go to education, better accommodation for 17,600 prior to rainy monsoons and hurricanes, and help bring separate and accompanying offspring back together with their family.
At Kachin and Shan, our aid will help and protect refugees from continuing war. These extra funds are in addition to the $15 million announcement on 28 April in Bangladesh in reaction to relief needs in the Cox's Bazar area. Since September 2017 Australia has thus provided a combined 51.5 million dollars in human aid for the Rohingya war.
