In January, Myanmar applied for inclusion of Bagan on the World Heritage List. "We presented Bagan at the recent World Heritage Committee conference in Bahrain to make it known around the world," said U Aung Aung Kyaw. Presentations covered the historical and contemporary state of the antique Bagan building, preservation of the cultural heritage, governance of the region's economic and social fabric and the atmosphere in the area.

"While there are many possibilities for needy companies when Bagan is declared a World Heritage Site, locals have reservations about the use of lands for business activities and the use of properties to build pagodas," said U Kyaw Win, who resides in Bagan Myo Thit. This is not in fact Bagan's first request for inclusion on the list.

A 1996 request was denied because of inadequate civilian administration. Though UNESCO can announce this year that Bagan is a World Heritage Site, the first World Heritage Site of the land was Phyu, the antique town that was built between the second and ninth centuries. The town of PYU in the north of Myanmar was declared a World Heritage Site in 2014.
