Adventure activities in Myanmar
The first time I visited Myanmar I was in reverence for this seductive yet rough land. As it was so new to the tourist industry, there was much to explore that made me feel like I was only scratching at the top of the world. In anticipation of my next trip, I have put together this short overview of some of the best adventures in Myanmar.
Myanmar is an adventurous power plant awaiting discovery, from breathtaking caverns and gorgeous low coastal towns to mountains. For a view of Myanmar's luxuriant jungle, you can hike for 3 hours to the top of a hill for a breathtaking view of Ngapali Bay.
Well-known as one of Myanmar's most beloved shores, this brief hike takes you through paddy and small towns while seeing some of the pulsating animals of the jungles. There is a clearly laid out trail, but it is also possible to go on accompanied hikes. So if you want to experience some real cultural and adventurous experiences, why not try your hand at mountaineering the famed Zwe Ka Bin Mountain?
This hike lasts 2-3 hrs according to your physical condition and leads you through a Buddha wood with an extensive lookout point over Myanmar with a few naughty apes to make the lookout point more interesting. They can either set up their own business or take part in one of the many proven trips offered by firms such as Flymya.
For example, one of their most favourite trips takes you through isolated towns and paddy fields of Nga Tha Yauk, Thein Ywar, Bo Cho Village, Mya Kan Thar Lake and Set Yo village. Even if this is not an adventuring trip from a technical point of view, the trip by rail over the Goteik viaduct is an exciting one.
The Great Railway Bazaar, a novel by Paul Theroux, will take you through the vast countryside of Myanmar. You can take the Mandalay to Lashio or the other way round, with similar sights to the famous Sri Lankan coaches. If you say dive in Asia, most of us immediately think of the Philippines or Thailand.
What most of us don't know, however, is that Myanmar has some rather spectecular, unspoilt cliffs on Ngapali Beach and in the Myeik (Mergui) Articel. As one of my favourite adventures in the land, I can't stop gushing about the hike from Kalaw to Inle Lake. When I walked through these small towns and slept in small host families, I could see the true beauties of Myanmar, often destroyed by trade touring.
Besides this special hike, there are other areas to visit: Myanmar's unfamiliar coastline has several small islets to explore. Guided snorkelling and swimming on unspoilt cliffs, these are the perfect way to experience the beauty of the area. Favourite Islandhopping locations are Cocks Comb Iceland, Harris Iceland and Smart Isl.
Hopefully this listing has inspire you to look for more adventures in Myanmar. Meanwhile, you can find more information about travelling around Myanmar in our hints and editorial.
