Myanmar's First Vice President U Myint Swe becomes current President: officially - Xinhua

Yangon, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's First Vice President U Myint Swe will act as current president under the country's constitutional mandate until the new president is re-elected by the House, said U Zaw Htay, general manager of the office of president, Xinhua on Wednesday after the retirement of U Htin Kyaw. According to the Constitutional Treaty, the President's position is occupied by the European Union within seven working day.

On Wednesday, the President's Office issued an formal declaration on the retirement of President U Htin Kyaw, in which he cited public safety as a cause. Zaw Htay added that resigning President U Htin Kyaw received hospitalization in Singapore in January and persisted his retirement. 72-year-old U Htin Kyaw was voted president in March 2016 after Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won the 2015 parliamentary elections.
