Are Myanmar safe? Threats of Terrorism & Security for Travellers

This article explains our argumentation about ethic travel: In Myanmar, extremist governance and riots caused many travellers to block tourist flows. They welcome travellers and want to exchange their cultures and histories with them. Nevertheless, the state is heavily militarized and there are relentless issues in the western and northern parts of the state.

The terrorist threat in the state is no longer the plague it used to be, mainly because of the elections to a (mostly) democracy based state. There is no evidence that aliens and visitors are the targets of these crimes, but they could be random casualties because they often appear in beloved, overcrowded places. Yangon (Rangoon) was the major destination of terrorist attack.

Their last major offensive took place in April 2010, when three bomb ings were detonated and 170 persons were wounded during the Buddhist New Year festivities in Yangon. Minor blasts in Yangon, Taungoo and Sagaing in October 2013 in which a foreigner was wounded. There were 3 small blasts in 2 hypermarkets on 17 and 20 November 2016 and 4 small blasts in front of the immigration office on 24 November 2016.

Burma's frontiers are particularly perilous places for terrorism and military outreach. Land mines are also a current menace on the Myanmar side of the frontier and have the capacity to cause catastrophic injuries or, even more so, deaths. Frontiers with China and Laos are particularly threatening because of the drugs trade and the rebels, and they are warned not to travel near them.

As the Rohingya question becomes a labyrinth, the borders with Bangladesh are becoming increasingly perilous. Burma's military and several ethnical groups, also severely armored, are involved in an on-going shooting. Growing tension between military groups in northern and southern Shan states and the Burma military has also resulted in an increase in terror.

Terrorism is particularly serious because it is so unpredictable and therefore it is very tricky to be prepared and protected. The best way to do this is to follow the security advisories locally and fully appreciate what is going on in that particular area. Burma is a relatively secure traveler' s haven and offers travellers the chance to enjoy a truly original and intriguing cultural life.

Attendees should be conscious of the dangers, but not stopped by them, as the advent of terrorism is not as likely as it was a few years ago with the advent of democratisation and increased state instability.
