When you are new to Myanmar, please review our destination information to help you decide where to go. Myanmar's most popular holiday resorts are Yangon, Mandalay, Inle Lake and Bagan and provide the foundation for a "classic" route.
But there are many other exciting sights and places to visit.
Burma becomes a tourist destination, but with costs associated
Myanmar's 2010 election may not have been free or just plain sailing, but under President Thein Sein's guidance, relationships with the outside world thawed out and more tourists began to visit the state. The New York Times writes that Aung San Suu Kyi, head of the government's political group, has also become more open to tourism: "It is the last part that poses the most immediate challenges to it.
Since then, Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy has welcomed all those who "promote the well-being of the nation and the preservation of the environment". More than one million persons attended in 2012, a tragic rise after years of global sanctioning against the state. The National Geographic report says that the growth in Myanmar's tourist industry has already been at the expense of the surrounding area, especially at the scenic Inle Lake, a tourist attraction.
A scientist working in the area, William Bleisch, said to National Geographic: "As we know, the tourist industry is expanding here, and it will not be sustained if it goes on this way. In view of this, I believe that there is a genuine interest and interest among the locals, the hoteliers, the municipality, the people living here and earning their living, that this does not damage the surroundings, that it does not damage the sea.
It is also very useful. It is hoped that by concentrating on the natural surroundings, Myanmar will be able to maintain the initial attraction of the local population.
