MOMs signed to boost cross-border trading between Thailand and Myanmar
The Thai and Myanmar economies and administrations have reached agreement to promote cross-border trading by enhancing current canal infrastructure and development of new itineraries, with an increased focus on exchanging information and a new special cross-border economic zone. Thailand's mission, headed by Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, held a meeting with State Councillor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on 2 February.
The President's Office said in a declaration that both sides were discussing support for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the development of border areas and the promotion of investments in infrastructures. During his first trip to Myanmar, the Vice Prime Minister underlined the importance of border trade for both sides' economies and indicated that both sides would agree to deepening relations through the development and modernisation of the Thailand-Myanmar Road.
Mr Jatusripitak said that the road - which runs from India to Myanmar and then to Thailand before it continues to Laos and Vietnam - is the principal canal linking the two lands and thus a central one for the area. It said Thailand will play a pro-active part in funding the building of underdeveloped trade lanes in Thailand and Myanmar.
Whilst the Mae Sot-Myawaddy border crossing is very important, there are other possibilities on the skyline. With the agreement of the competent Thai administration and the Myanmar State or Region Minister, new ports along the border can be used as cross-border trade lanes. Trade along the border will then thrive.
The creation of the ASEAN Economic Community will contribute to the penetration of the markets by promoting cross-border commerce through the integration of the two nations, in particular the CLMV states ("Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam"). These affected the strengthening of the tourist industry in Myanmar-Thailand, the improvement of border traffic and cooperation in the development of countryside. In the two neighbouring states, which are managed by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber and Industry (UMFCCI) in separate units, the parties sign Memorandums on cooperation in various areas such as infrastructures, communication, construction as well as farming.
Among the Mohammed' SDC' s key partners are the modernisation of Dawei General Hospital, co-operation in the fishing sector and a mechanisms between Krung Thai Bank and Myanma Economic Bank to facilitate the process of transferring funds by migratory labourers in Myanmar. Mr Jatusripitak said Thailand has a lot of expertise in the development of industries and agriculture which both have significant opportunities in Myanmar.
Today, cross-border trading is as much about the sharing of information as it is about the circulation of goods and goods. Commercial arrangements also include the development of Myanmar's SME, e-commerce, human resource and soft-ware development. In cooperation with UMFCCI, the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) and the FTI, HR is being developed and research results are being exchanged.
"Panitarn Pavarolavidya, Chairman of the Thai-Myanmar Business Council and Vice Generalsekretär of the FTI, said: "We want and want to promote the exports of Myanmar, Thailand and the world markets. Mae Sot and Myawaddy, divided by the Moei River, were to be developed into a SEZ.
The Thai authorities, in cooperation with the power industry, have submitted a plan for the modernisation of current power plants. As early as 2013, the Thai goverment resolved to set up a SED in the border city of Mae Sot.
"Establishing a SED in Mae Sot could help the ASEAN economic community to grow and generate more employment.... Myanmar's Myawaddy worker community on Myanmar's side could later make money.... if the labor market is highly productive. The Mae Sot custom officers were boasting that the border city lies on the planned East-West economic corridor route that would link Muse, Tamu, Mandalay and Yangon and bring real advantages to billions of lives.
Prime Minister U Zaw Min also advocated the Economic Corridor Route, a Asian Bank-backed initiative that took place years ago at the west end of the suggested "corridor". The 1450 kilometre motorway at various phases of construction was to connect Vietnam from Da Nang with Laos and Thailand and then lead through the state of Kayin to the harbour of Mawlamyine at the estuary of the Thanlwin (Salween).
The project was expected to ease Myanmar's and Thailand's economic ties and improve links within the Mekong area. The Thai mission said there are blueprints presented to Nay Pyi Taw to authorize and govern the use of Batt in Myanmar to ease it.
Both Thailand's local and Chinese currencies are widely used in some parts of Myanmar.
