Myanmar's President-designate U Win Myint is inaugurated - Xinhua
Y PYI TAW, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's President-designate U Win Myint will be inaugurated on Friday, the Union Parliament said on Thursday. The first and second vice-presidents of U Myint Swe and U Henry Van Thio will also take the official Oaths of Government in the Presidential Termination in the company of U Mann Win King Than.
Following the ceremonies, the new president will give a keynote address. Former House spokesman U Win Myint was voted Myanmar's new president in Wednesday's US general elections and became the tenth president of Myanmar in 1948, when the nation gained back its independenc... It was organised by the Union Parliament to fill the vacant chairmanship of U Htin Kyaw, who last weeks resigned for medical reason.
U Win Myint, appointed by the House of Representatives, won the general elections under three vice-presidents with 403 or more than 63 per cent of the 636 delegates represented in the general elections. MYINT SWE, nomination by the army, won 211 ballots, while V Henry Van Thio, nomination by the House of Nationalities, received 18-by-four.
Mr U Win Myint stepped down last weekend by the spokesman of the Chamber of Representatives (House of Commons), but was re-elected as Vice-President and appointed as a nominee for the Presidency elections. In the by-elections in 2012, U Win Myint, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was voted into the Pathein electoral district's Chamber of Representatives and was re-elected to the same Tammwe electoral district in the 2015 parliamentary elections.
In 2016 he became spokesman of the House of Representatives and served in his function until his election as president.
