About RANGOON - Myanmar nationals can now request and directly obtain a passport at 15 sites across the state. In the past, the land had only one passport office in Rangoon.
On Friday last Friday, the federal administration opened new passport bureaus as more and more petitioners needed the paper for professional or health care purposes, says Maung Maung Maung Lin, a Myanmar Passport Issuing Board policeman headquartered in Mon State. In the past year, the German authorities began to tighten up the visa request procedure and reduce the wait time from 21 to 10 working hours for obtaining a passport.
Under the new states and division office, petitioners are paying 20,000 Kyat ($20) in Rangoon for a passport and 25,000 Kyat ($25) at other sites for additional overhead. A passport is a five-year passport that can be obtained within three to five working day periods in certain cases, such as an emergency health situation.
Former prisoner of conscience Thet Oo said this weekend that former detainees in his company were still awaiting a passport after they applied more than two month ago. "They can obtain their national and divisional passes, but the immigrants must come to Yangon[Rangoon] and turn to agents to officially work in Thailand," he said.
Burma's Labour Ministry last year announces that it will be issuing normal passes for Myanmar immigrants in Thailand. As of 2009, the Myanmar authorities have only been issuing provisional passes. There are an approximate 3 million Myanmar immigrants living in Thailand. Approximately 1.7 million of these were temporarily granted, while 1.3 million are not documented according to labour law groups.
While the Burmese authorities have established five bureaus in Thailand near the Burmese frontier to provide normal passes, the bureaus have not been opened due to continuing policy unrest in Thailand.
