Myanmar to push for full democratization
It' s been a long, tough journey, but Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will at last take on the part of Myanmar's leading civil. Their National League for Democracy won a landmark win last November in the country's first free elections in a quarter age. However, a rule in Myanmar's military-drafted constitution prevented Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, from becoming its President because her offspring are UK nationals.
Myanmar's lower chamber adopted a resolution on Tuesday that makes Aung San Suu Kyi, the presidential secretary and secretary of state, "state advisor", an effective way to run the nation outside the presidential term. The Federal Council had previously agreed to the measures.
It' s now about the signing of Myanmar' s new chairman, Htin Kyaw, a strong associate she has chosen for this work. Aung San Suu Kyi's challenges now lie in implementing reform of the constitution and the law to guarantee Myanmar's transition to democratisation. Under those amendments, the Bill should overturn the constituent rule that prevents them from being presidents, removing the state adviser's roll and shifting toward full civil rule.
It won't be easy: Myanmar's army still has one-fourth of the parliament's seat, as well as the defence, interior and frontier mines. The new administration can act quickly to remedy serious breaches of fundamental freedoms, as well as the brutal prosecution of the Muslim Rohingyas. Burma is a member of last month's Bali Declaration on Smuggling, which commits itself to partially combat the trade in humans by enhancing the circumstances that compel distressed individuals to fare.
United Nations Secretary-General for Myanmar Yanghee Lee called on the new administration last months to implement a range of reform measures within the first 100 working day, which include the amendment or repeal of a 1982 bill denying Rohingyas and some others nationality. Myanmar's population has been waiting for more than half a centurys for the democratic process.
It is the role of the new administration, headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, to meet her expectations.
