Burma opens international airport in new capitol

After Mandalay and the trading capitol Yangon, Naypyitaw International Airport will be Myanmar's third international airport. This airport was designed by Burma's Asia World building contractor with the support of Singapore based CPG Consultants Pte and opened at the same time as the 4th peak of the Greater Mekong subregion, consisting of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and China.

The building began in April 2007, two years after the then army regime declared it would move the capitol from Yangon to Naypyitaw, a mysterious town on a hilltop about 390 km further North. The airport has a 3.6 km long take-off and landing strip, a 69 m high watchtower and 10 jetways and can operate 50,000 to 65,000 aircraft per year, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Yangon's major airport has a passenger traffic volume of 2.7 million per year.
