Reminiscences of the canvas

Movie fans can expect another tidbit as well! The 7th International Movie Heritage International is returning to Yangon this weekend. This year' s event, which shows classical Myanmar and worldwide cinema, aims to introduce a new breed to the passion for classical music. There will be screenings in Nay Pyi Taw and Waziya, the oldest cinema in Yangon, from 4 to 13 November.

This year' s topic is "Travel". On show are some 60 internationally acclaimed classic movies in monochrome and color, as well as Myanmar movies Myaganaing (The Emerald Jungle, 1934), Jadanabon (Treasure Trove, 1953) and Che Phawa Daw Nu Nu (Tender are the Feet, 1972). Memoryconcert! is the only truly global show devoted exclusively to Asian cinema.

Myanmar Times was informed by Severine Wemaere, creator of Memory Cinema, a non-profit organization that organizes the event, that she organizes the event in Myanmar for two mainasons. Ever since the 2014 edition of the event first came to the city, Myanmar's audience has grown an enormous craving for it. "I would like to thank Memory Cinema for organizing such a great event to show the valuable treasures of our nation to the rest of the planet and the new generation," said U Thein Naing, Information Manager of the Film Development Department.

The oldest still existing movie of Myanmar, Mya Ganaing (The Emerald Jungle), made in 1934, will be premiered on November 4 at Nay Pyi Taw Cinema, accompanied by Hein Tint (Thaung Htike) and his company Hsiang Waing, together with two Berlin musicians: It has been renovated by Memory Cinema as part of its effort to conserve Myanmar's cultural heritages.

"Beyond this emblematic restauration, we must remember that something urgently needs to be done to recover what remains of Myanmar's filmmaking legacy. The Myanmar movie theater has a glory story, but that story is in danger," Wemaere said in an August Myanmar Times editorial. The Myanmar Academy Award winner Daw Swe Zin Htaik (Grace) described the event as "a real one.

"I' ve always wanted to gather old videos showing Myanmar's life style from the 1920' to the 1950'. I' d like to show 10 videos when the 2020 edition of the biennial comes back," she said at a November 1st news briefing at the Chatrium Hotel. Celebrating Myanmar's centenary as a filmmaker in 2020, the 2020 edition already contains a large number of old and new cinematics.

This year' s highlights will be a show at Mahabandoolaola Park with two films: The Artist by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, who will be the honorary guests at the Stage. A Gaumont exhibition: 120 years of cinema, presented at the Waziya Theatre, opens on 5 November in the company of Gaumont Worlwide Chairman Nicolas Seydoux.

The Gaumont is the oldest movie society in the whole wide web and is located in France. Buster Keaton's Seven Chances (56 min, silent), accompanied by U Kyi Soe Tun and the Laurel Art Academy, will be shown at Waizayar Cinema on November 6. Among the honoured guest of honor are Catherine Deneuve and Daw Grace Swe Zin Htaik, the actors and chairman of U Lu Min U Lu Min UMPO, the stage manager U Kyi Soe Tun, the Thai stage manager Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the Myanmar-Taiwanese stage manager Midi Z, the executive filmmaker and chief executive officer of Gaumont (France) Nicolas Seydoux and the camebodian stage manager

First was Cambodia, the second in November 2014 in Yangon. Last year the third one took place at the Nay Pyi Taw Cinema. Amnesia! The 7th International Filmerheatre is taking place from 4th to 13th November at the Nay Pyi Taw Cinema and the Waziya Cinema.
