Evaluation of media in Myanmar

Nationally accountability for the evaluation was secured through the participation of the Section of journalism at the NMC and through various multi-stakeholder consultation. More than five years after the countrys launch of a range of reforms in politics, society and the economy, this document is an impartial, analytic review of how far Myanmar has moved towards freer, more inclusive and pluralist media.

The most important changes in the media industry have included the enactment of the Printing and Publishing Act (PPEL) in 2014, which formally abolishes the previous system of official censure and gives the editorial independence of the newspaper from the state, the Broadcasting Act of 2015, which will enable the development of privately, publicly and communally owned media, and the founding of the Myanmar News Media Council in October 2015.

This 18-month evaluation covered the various facets of Myanmar's media environment, taking into account the 50 key MDI frame of reference. Every section of the progress review contains a number of suggestions for further action to contribute to the on-going media reforms in Myanmar.
