Capital of Myanmar, travel guide
- Especially the Kalaw highway is really poor and it can take a long while if a lorry is blocking the highway....... take a profit mark in your math. If you have to drive to Kalaw, remember that it will take about 2 to 3 hrs from the Kalaw flat.
Don't begin to clamber to Kalaw when it's already 3 or 4 pm. - Our street between Bago and Taungoo is in very good state. Let's just pray that the street will withstand the upcoming monsoons. Allowed 5 hrs from Bago to Taungoo (6 hrs from Yangon) (Update 19-05-2009).
New motorway: The government recently (April 2009) opened a new 8-lane motorway between Yangon and the new capitol Nay Pyi Taw. Bago and Taungoo by-pass is a beautiful street, really less perilous than the old one, but since you don't pass through any village, it's not very fun to explore Myanmar's countryside.
The journey from Yangon - Nay Pyi Taw is only 4h30 hrs compared to 8h30 hrs on the old one. - Nightmares between Pyay and Ngapali. If you are fortunate, it can take 12 hrs, some folks have recently taken 20h. - There is a very beautiful but very poor street between Ngapali and Gaw (at least 12 hours) for 80 mile........

Burma has more to offer than Bagan, although the former Burma capitol is its main characteristic. As is well known, the area is dry and cloudy most of the year, especially from March to May, during which the day' s temperature is the highest. It is the perfect season for visiting the area from November to February.
Popa Daung Kalat, better known as Mt. Popa, is one of the best places in the city. Assumed to be the heart of an extinguished lava, the hill is a favorite place of sanctuary and an important "nat" place of service in Myanmar. At the top of Mount Popa is the Taungkalat Monastery, home to the 37 Nat people who live in the sanctuary shown below.
The Soon Lu Kyaung Convent, Shwesandaw Pagoda, Wunchataung Pagoda and Shwemyetman Pagoda are other remarkable places in the city.
