Minister of Foreign Affairs visits Myanmar

Secretary of State Tim Soini (Blue) is on a two-day trip to Myanmar. On the occasion of his trip, Soini will participate in the ASEM Foreign Ministers' meeting in Naypyidaw, open a new Finnish embassy and see Myanmar de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It will focus on the continuing human rights crises in Rohingya.

Myanmar's Rohingya migrants from Myanmar's Islamic minorities escaped rape, assault, extrajudicial assassinations and a burnt soil policies in their cities and communities. Rohingya insurgents started co-ordinated attack on tens of Myanmar policing and security guards in August. United Nations says that Myanmar's answer is "ethnic cleansing" with the intent to expel the Rohingya from Myanmar's Buddhist population.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has been widely criticized for not halting the fighting and for not taking any action to curb the influx of people across the Bangladesh borders, where Finland's health workers provide essential health care. Finland is looking for ways to end the fighting and allow returnees to go home in safety, according to the Foreign Ministry.

This year, Finland's leaders have already expressed their concern to Aung San Suu Kyi about the situation of the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Timo Soini will also anoint a new embassy of Finland in Yangon during the tour. Though not the capitol, it is the biggest town in Myanmar where most embassies and consulates are based.

Whilst Finland's first Ambassador to Myanmar Riikka Laatu will focus on trade relationships, the Ambassador will also assist the Middle East Trade and Trade Commission in the areas of the Middle East, the Middle East and Africa, the Middle East and Africa.
