The HPA-AN GUIDE - Little Hidden Treasure of Myanmar
Hpa An in Myanmar is a off-road target through Myanmar and is therefore often overjumped. The Hpa-An (pronounced Pa Ahn) is a small town encircled by juicy paddy paddies, calcareous hills and many cave. Enjoy some of the best things in the world: experiencing a little bit of traditional Thai culture, hiking, visiting the largest reclining Buddhas in the whole country or exploring the paddy paddies.
Spend about two full working day exploring all things in Hpa-An. The Hpan Pu Mountain is the ideal way to enjoy Hpa-An. There are a great many farmers in this area who produce vegetable and market it in Hpa-An. When you have got off the ferry, go 350 metres to a small village and see the sign'Hpan Pu Mountain' on the south.
When you are at the bottom of the hill, turn right and go to this point. There is a staircase on the leftside which will take you to a beautiful panorama over Hpa-An in about 20 mins. Do not go directly from the highway to the hill. Hike around the hill (as above).
In the early hours of the day, if you find it too dull to walk up Hpan Pu Mountain, get out and walk up to Zwekabin Mountain. Half way from Yangon to Hpa-An there is the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, better known as Golden Rock. This is one of the most important Buddhist places in Myanmar.
From the top, the view is wonderful and it is amazing to see how many (locals) there are on the summit. The Thanlyin River sundown is one of the easiest but most remarkable activities in Hpa-An. The Hpa-An is set in the incredible verdant paddy paddies.
Hire a motorcycle or bicycle and ride outside the city. You cultivate paddy several nights a year, so you have a great opportunity to see it. Approximately 1.5 hours by car from Hpa-An is situated the village of Marlamyine. It is a more sophisticated but less touristic city. It was the former port of Myanmar before it relocated to Yangon.
When you try to add Hpa-An to your Myanmar route, you should take 2 to 3 day's time. The Hpa-An is still new in the tourist industry and has a small choice of accommodation.
