Big Golden Pot - Budget Guesthouse Bagan, Myanmar (Nyaung oo)
We were always trying to find cheap lodging in Myanmar at the Large Golden Pot Guest House Bagan. At $15 per room (low season Apr 2013) we got a king sized cot, air con, en-suite (with shower and west toilet) and some other small discounts like a dryer for clothing.
In comparison to other inns (at the end of this piece we have been visiting and checking) we believe Golden Pot was the best pop for your bucks in Nyaung oo (The backpackers city near Bagan). There were many others we went to, we were even initially registered in "May Kha Lar", one of the best valued budgeted guest houses in the area (from travelling advisors/Wiki trips), but seemed to have a really bad price-performance ratio, although the owner was cute.
It was just a tube.... but she did the work for the low cost we paid! Although may Kha Lar Guesthouse Bagan included breakfasts when you can buy stunning breakfasts from onsite sellers for 500kyat (55 cents), it does not seem good value to spend $10 extras for an low-quality room where breakfasts are the only add-on you get.
Big golden crock, was just outside the touristic area, but right next to the main square and all the inexpensive locals eateries - so if you want a locals budgeting event, this is actually a better place than if all the other guesthouses are near the school.
In Large Golden Pot the owners were supportive, English was a little shoddy, but ok, the rooms were a little shoddy, but not much different from other cheesy inns in Myanmar, and of course there were often electrical issues, which means that the AC didn't work about 30% of the way.... However, these outages are all over the city, unless you live in an inexpensive 24-hour runnin' generator room, you won't have anyhow.
While we believe our $15 room is a low rate (but not certain), you may be expecting to be paying $20 for this room in the high rate period compared to other locations, which will be priced at $20-$25 from April 2013. Burma's current rate of annual rate hikes of $2-$10 for all rooms is expected for the 2013/2014 period.
A few alternative possibilities for the guesthouse Bagan. From Nyaung-oo to Bagan, about half way between the bus terminal and the fair. Northern end of Nyaung-oo to Bagan Rd. Near the square. Nyaung-oo to Bagan highway, nearer to the bus terminal than to the northern end of the town. Spacious and appropriate rooms at a reasonable rate.
