escapeist entertainment: Burmese Hollywood Movies
Burma's Hollywood portrayals portray the countryside as an alien, ferocious place, a setting for adventurous people. Burma's early Hollywood imagery was romantically melodramatic about endangered female whites who used the South East Asia scenery as an alien setting. This and other movies about Burma have marginalized Myanmar people.
An exhilarating, dumb whodunit about sex and homicide, Road to Mandalay (1926), dominated. It is Dorothy Lamour's turn as night club canteuse, Moon Over Burma (1940), where Burma is portrayed as a paradise of jungles, the customary backdrop for her beloved "sarong movies" in which she sings, wrapped in formal bicolor.
During the whole decennium, the topics of the Second World War were dominating Burma and Hollywood. One group of Burma Road films was released - Burma Convoy (1941), Bombs Over Burma (1942) and A Yank on the Burma Road (1942) - but they were shot mainly at the end of the 1,000-mile Burma Road that once connected China with India.
Burma's only Hollywood comedy, Rookies in Burma (1943), brings together the subjects of the 1930s and 1940s as a couple of funny troops who escaped from a Japanese-style detention center and met with a couple of dazzling night club entertainment for a getaway through Burma. Myanmar as a place of refuge is the major topic of the following Hollywood Burma movies, from the 1940s and more recently equally.
Director Raoul Walsh started Objective Burma (1945) with documentaries, although the remainder of the movie looks like a Californian countryside with exotic plant life. Gregory Peck's Brazilian driver Gregory Peck, lost his woman in the London bombings and then crashed in Burma's arid area.
Until 1995, The Purple Plain was the only Burma Westerns film that dealt with the cast of real people. The writer Paul West has wrote that "slim, pleasing, profoundly spiritual" Anna with her crunchy English emphasis "revives the film" and calls "all Asiatic heroines" of the literary world. Though Anna finally acts as an operative to save the West man, the film is about her when Win Min Than is on the film.
Getting from the lofty to the ludicrous is escape to Burma (1955) a little rubbish, apparently intended for the Saturday morning mob. Even hints of tiger, ruby, nat (animistic spirits) and dacoit don't make this Burma any nearer.
