Languagu Log " Missing words in Myanmar

NYT 7/19/2015, Thomas Fuller, "Those who would revitalize Myanmar find that words fail: It is the beginning of Myanmar's democratic system. I wish the Burmese had their own words. Since this former tyranny is opening up to the outside worlds, speech is a hurdle. Myanmar was so isolated from the outside of the country for half a hundred years that individuals were arrested for possessing an unauthorised telefax.

Rigorous publication criticism, restricted publicity, restricted worldwide coverage of the press and creaky links to the web slowed the development of the Myanmar audio-visual and left it without many words that are regarded elsewhere as integral parts of contemporary politics and engineering expression.

There' s such a thing as democracy: People in Burma used the term Demokratie a few years ago - it is spoken dee-mock-rah-SEE - but for many people in Burma it is still a strange and somewhat abstracted term. Naturally, the British lent about 1500 from Central France from Central France, and the Macedonians from the post-classical Latino democracies, which they in turn lent from the old Greece  ??????????.

Myanmar is far from being the only place in the whole wide globe where democracies "remain a strange and somewhat abstracted concept". Young people from Burma grow up with state-of-the-art technologies and different approaches and form a gap between the different generation. They say it with the words. There' s no such thing as a computer in Burma.

It is a classical "no words for X" piece claiming that one of the challenge of Burma's reform is that there are no "indigenous" words in Burma for things like "computers" or "democracy". From my own experiences working with refugee camps in Burma, they have a good understanding of what a "computer" is despite the fact that the term comes from abroad.

This is a worthwhile supplement to our "'No Word for X' archive'.
