In Myanmar, after decade-long periods of dictatorial dictatorship, the process of democracy in which Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy came to rule in the 2015 election seems to have been unstable. Activa-tors and reporters are still facing lawsuits and imprisonment because they have spoken out on questions of dispute, faith based intolerance and corrupt practices by the country's mighty army, which still has clout.
Several obsolete and restricted legislation remains in the accounts and the state still has a number of fundamental conventions to be ratified. There is an increasing threat to free journalism through the periodic use of reporting offences against reporters, and the Telecommunications Act's rules on libel continues to be used to combat criticisms of slander by the mass media and the general population.
Growing anti-Rohingya hatred speeches and intercommunal tension have also triggered a serious crises of respect for people in Rakhine State, and while the conflict continues throughout the entire state, there is a threat of worsening democracy as a result of a division of religions and people.
